The Genealogy of Samuel Frost Haviland 1798 - 1858 who went to Chile

A. Adam Haviland, Born Flushing, NY 10th December 1698. Died 10th April 1768. He was probably grandson to William Haviland 1606 - 1662 who was born in Salisbury England emigrated to Rhode Island ca. 1638 and there married ca. 1653 to Hanna Hicks 1637 - 1688 and became a successful patriarch .   Adam married Rhode Island ca. 1725 Mary Lott (born Flushing 12th November 1698, died 6th January 1747 Gregorian).
a. Gilbert Haviland, Born 6th June 1726. Still alive 1786. Married Westchester, NY Elizabeth Downing (born New York 6th May 1630, died before 1771).
1. John Downing Haviland.  Born Courtland, NY 21st November 1769. Died Courtland, NY 10th April 1829.Married 27th October 1796 by Rev. Silas Constant of Yorktown Anna Wright Frost (born 1st December 1776, died Courtland, NY 5th April 1851). She was probably a great grand daughter to William Frost of Oyster Bay 1674 - 1728.
i. Charlotte Haviland Born 18th July 1797. Died Amawalk, New York, 14th February 1874.
ii Samuel Frost Haviland Born Peeksill, NY 22nd December 1798. Died Santiago, Chile 13th December 1858. He was appointed 26th February 1820 First lieutenant, 3rd artillery regiment, New York State, and then went to Chile, arriving first at Valparaiso March 1822. In Chile he is credited with having established the first bank in that country, and in March 1839 he was appointed US Consul General at Coquimbo, where no Americans lived and where reportedly any consular matters were handled for him by a Britisher who did live there. Married Puerto de Huaso, Chile 19th August 1825 Maria Feliza Ossandón (born Chile 20th November 1803, died Chile 26th February 1893), daughter of Diego Zepeda Ossandón and Maria del Rosario Iribarren.  He thereby married a sister of the wife of his uncle, Daniel Wright Frost  (who had preceded him in emigrating to Chile). 11 children probably.
(A) Samuel Gilbert Haviland. Born Chile 9th August 1828. Died before 10th November 1830. In a letter quoted by Josephine Frost and dated 13th August 1828, the boy's father wrote to his own parents that his first child  had been born four days earlier. In another letter dated 10th November 1830, father wrote that he had lost his first son, Samuel Gilbert, and that Daniel S, the second son, was at that date fourteen months old. Those are the sources for dates prefered in these paragraph. Baptismal records give a different version, which I have summarized in the next paragraph together with my own speculative explanation over the discrepancy.
(B) Daniel Sandalio Haviland. Born La Serena, Chile ca. July 1829. Christened La Serena 17th February 1830. Died (unm) 7th April 1866. There is some confusion in the written record of his baptism where he is recorded as "Samuel Avilan de ocho meses". The age aligns with the age given in personal correspondence of the boy's father as the age of Daniel Sandalio Haviland. But the name Samuel is the name of this baby's elder brother, born August 1828, who was dead by the end of 1830. (Avilan is one of several interesting spellings of the anglophone name Haviland applied by the registrars who, evidently, received only orally the names and dates they were given, wrote down what they thought they heard and who had insufficient (for this purpose) experience of spoken English.) We can speculate that perhaps the boys were both baptised at the same time, and the record thereof became garbled in transmission to the registrar.
(C) Anna Maria Felisa Haviland. Born La Serena, 10th February 1831. Died Valparaiso, Chile 12th July 1892. Married Tamaya, Ovalle, Chile 3rd August 1861 Louis Rudolphus (born Philadelphia 13th January 1832, died Philadelphia 4th July 1895). He was US consul in Coquimbo 1860 - 1873.

This genealogy is not intended to be comprehensive.  A large amount of Haviland genealogy is already accessible on the web, and no good purpose is served by duplicating that. The ambition of this page is to document the genealogy most nearly touching  Samuel Frost Haviland 1798 - 1858  who went to Chile. Several of his daughters married and had children: as far as I can tell the children of many of the US expatriates who had settled in Chile in the nineteenth century tended to return to the US in the early twentieth century.  However, aside from my own branch, my knowledge of the descendants of SFH fizzles out rapidly after about 1910: I would naturally be delighted to be contacted by any fellow genealogy enthusiast able to reduce my ignorance here.

Anyone interested in Haviland genealogy beyond the scope of this page, is recommended to the genealogical website of Christopher Haviland.   This includes a schedule of other people sharing your interest in branches of the Haviland family

Because the genealogy presented here does not seek to be comprehensive, it follows that generation indicator marks (e.g.  A, a, 1, i, (A),( a), (1),( i)) do not necessarily indicate the chronological position of a child's birth date in relation to those of siblings.

My starting point for these data has been the records left by my grandfather, Eduardo Haviland Hillman 1874 - 1947. He devoted a good deal of energy to researching his mother's Haviland antecedents. Unfortunately, no source notes are included with the notes I have inherited from him. This is the more frustrating since there seem to be disparate versions of the genealogical truth concerning just how Adam Haviland 1698 - 1768 (with whom the present table starts) descends from the immigrant ancestor, William Haviland of Salisbury. Eduardo also contributed to a principal published source on these Havilands, which is The Frost Genealogy, published privately by Josephine Frost at New York 1912, and was rewarded by having his portrait reproduced opposite Page 222 of that excellent volume. Much of the same data reappeared in Josephine Frost's The Haviland Genealogy published New York 1914 by the Lyons Genealogical Company.

Despite the excellence of these secondary sources, I am uncomfortably aware that for these data, little direct reference has been made to primary sources outside Chile. For those Chilean researches I am particularly grateful to Alberto Brenner.  Other enthusiasts and kinsfolk have also contributed ample information, inspiration (or, indeed, both) to my own data on this branch of Haviland genealogy. I am indebted also to Charlie Greene, Gavin Greene, Mauricio Pilleux , José Manuel Carvallo Torres , Jaeme Haviland and Richard Haviland.  Richard Haviland has a prodigious knowledge of Haviland genealogy which he has shared generously (though unfortunately most of it is beyond the consciously restricted scope of this page):  Richard is himself always keen to hear from any Haviland descendant with genealogical knowledge to share.

The name Charles Collins Greene (included above) includes a link to a page on the Long Island Genealogy Website , hosted by Mac to whom I am also grateful. New York state remains an important area of Haviland concentration. The Long Island website includes a Haviland section and a whole lot more intriguing Long Island genealogy.   It does, however, appear to have been extensively reworked - presumably also improved - since I formed my opinion of it and wrote that last sentence!

I record my thanks to all who have contributed information and encouragement, and beg forgiveness from any others who have contributed, directly or indirectly, to the compilation of  these data, but are not currently acknowledged here. Residual errors are, of course, my own responsibility.
